The awesome AMG GTS!

So you have just over a hundred grand burning a whole in your pocket for the sports car of your dreams, the default choice has to be a Porsche 911. Maybe also the Corvette ZO6, which is a rocket ship. No doubt the AMG GTS enters into an extremely tough sector of the market in terms of competition, but it more than holds its own against its rivals, but let there be no doubt AMG has produced a very special car which is more than capable of challenging for the title of best in class.

AMG has produced a special car which is more than capable of challenging for the title of best in class.

From the outside, it’s difficult to argue that it isn’t a simply gorgeous looking car. The lines are stunning, with a classic smooth cigar shape, unadorned with spoilers and do-dads that will no doubt be a classic 50 years from now.

Despite the move to turbo charging there is still a lovely deep rumble from the V8 that AMG engines are known for. With the sports exhaust button pressed the car erupts and throbs like an offshore power boat – what a sound!

It takes a little bit of getting used to driving with such a long snout sticking out in front of you, so placing in traffic (and in tight places) takes some getting used to. However all is forgotten with a sharp press on the accelerator that results in a split second of lag as the turbo gathers it’s breath and then slams you down the road with unbelievable thrust, the traction control flashing away to keep you from wrapping this beauty around the nearest telephone pole.

This thing is FAST AS HELL!!!

The AMG GTS is equally beautiful on the inside. The cabin is impeccably trimmed and despite the six figure price tag, has the feel and touch of a more expensive car.

Perhaps partly to do with the SLS predecessor, which was a MUCH more expensive car, people out and about assume that is a full blooded super car, more in league with a Lamborghini or Ferrari, than the Porsche 911 that it competes with in price. Indeed the AMG GTS passes the mobile phone test – every traffic light sees camera phones appearing and flashes popping like fire flies in spring from phone carrying children with their faces smearing the windows of every laden mini van that pulls up.

I have to admit that Cars&Caviar was not a terrible idea – in the last few weeks I have been forced to review a plethora of sports and exotic cars – and this AMG is definitely up there among my very favorites. There is one word that springs to mind when describing the AMG – it’s just plain sexy.

In addition unlike most of the other cars that I have had the pleasure of testing – my wife really wants this one! It doesn’t have the feeling of a manhood “extension” mobile – but rather implies you already have it where it counts. And if that isn’t the ultimate endorsement of a means of transportation I don’t know what is.
