Sleepy Floyd is Wide Awake – Behind the Scenes Fun

It was a gorgeous fall afternoon at the Vue Tower in Uptown Charlotte, when we first heard the roar of a powerful engine far below.  Even at an elevation of 450 feet, that sound cut through the City’s familiar hum. This could only signal one thing.

The Adventador had arrived!

Our cast and crew had gathered at my residence, nicknamed the “SkyHouse”, to prepare for the day’s shoot.  Excited about the amazing machine that had just arrived, we hurried into the elevator and down to the guest parking garage for our first look.

We were not disappointed.  Leif Wombwell, was standing by this magnificent machine bathed in the halogen glow of the guest parking area.

He was absolutely beaming with excitement and delight after navigating this fine automobile through the city streets.  The crew swarmed around to take in it’s stunning, angular beauty, and rich orange hue.

Now thoroughly covered in fingerprints, the Adventador had a date with the Cormin Auto Spa, located on the 7th floor of the Vue Tower’s parking garage, for a thorough detailing in the capable hands of the owner, Shawn DesChamps.

Meanwhile, the crew busied themselves with preparations for the shoot, and awaiting the arrival of NBA Hall of Fame Great, Eric “Sleepy’ Floyd!

Eric, and our very own, Cate Wombwell, were cast as our actors in tonight’s shoot.  “Sleepy”, was on a very tight schedule this evening , as he was to meet with members of his charitable organization.  Since retirement, this amazing athlete continues to inspire young people as a mentor with his youth charitable organization, Jobsy Wobsy.

We hurried the duo into makeup and styling, while our cinematographer, Andre Solodankin, and his wife, Mercy, and their extended crew readied their equipment. Leif and myself, worked with the film crew to finalize our “plan of attack”, as we made our way out of the building.

Once again, the Vue residents could hear and feel the sound of an engine far below, this time with our guest star, “Sleepy Floyd” behind the wheel.  He and Cate, made their way out of the garage and onto the busy Uptown streets. Tonight’s destination was the trendy and vibrant, 5Church restaurant, a favorite amongst the cast and crew, and for “Sleepy”, as well!

As the crew gathered at the venue, heads were turning at the distant roar of the Adventador approaching.  5Church, was packed with patrons as “Sleepy” and Cate, pulled into the valet adjacent to the restaurant.  Just inside the restaurant, and on the street as well, bystanderswere spellbound as this Supercar arrived top-down, with our actors in tow!

Our production team revved into high gear, as we shot footage of the Duo arriving and departing, and exiting the vehicle to make their way inside 5Church.  A large group of bystanders had gathered on the sidewalks to take in the scene.

This car has the amazing ability to stop people dead in their tracks!

“This car has the amazing ability to stop people dead in their tracks!”

The bystanders simply stare in disbelief and awe after gazing on this otherworldly machine, as it dominates the space around it. After putting “Sleepy” and Cate through the rigors of numerous takes, time was growing short as we had a tight schedule to begin with. 5Church manager, Gabrielle Biggs, had kept open a lounge area just inside the eatery, with a clear view of the Adventador just outside.

We had to make an “executive decision”, to skip the taping of the interior shots inside the club, as it was nearly time for “Sleepy” to meet with his team.  We had a critical scene to shoot at the Vue Tower on the “SkyHouse” balcony, the closing shot for this production.

With this amazing city view spread below us, we concluded our production with a Champagne toast!

NEW HURACÁN PERFORMANTE TAKES THE LAP RECORD AT NÜRBURGRING NORDSCHLEIFE

The Lamborghini Huracán Performante has already proved its extraordinary capabilities ahead of its unveiling at Geneva Motor Show next week. On 5 October 2016, the Huracán Performante set a new production car lap record of 6:52.01 min on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

Following the day’s open sessions on the “Ring”, at 17.00 officials closed the track to other manufacturers. After official track checks this left just a 15-minute window for Lamborghini to make one attempt at the lap record with a production Huracán Performante, still in its development camouflage.

With Lamborghini test driver Marco Mapelli  behind the wheel, who also drove the Aventador SV to its Nürburgring sub seven-minute lap time in 2015, the Huracán Performante warmed up its tires and made its rolling start, fitted inside and out with onboard cameras and telemetry to record the car’s lap. The Lamborghini team of R&D engineers, technicians and drivers, together with Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Maurizio Reggiani, Board Member for Research & Development, watched the Performante disappear into the distance of the 20.6 km track.

In the sixth minute, the car was heard heading down the long straight with just three corners to go, and its audience counting down the seconds to watch the Huracán Performante pass over the line at 6:52.01 min.

“This was an incredible and emotional moment,” says Stefano Domenicali. “Together with Maurizio Reggiani we agreed during the car’s development that with the technical and performance prowess of the Huracán Performante, not only was a sub seven-minute lap at the Nordschleife possible, but the lap record too. We wanted to achieve the Nürburgring victory in advance of the Performante’s launch, which was a challenge in terms of weather and availability of the Nordschleife. Not only did we take the lap record, we took it by some seconds!

“To make this happen is something that every one of the R&D team who worked on this car can share in: it will forever be a defining moment in their careers,” concludes Stefano Domenicali. “I am so proud of everything achieved by Lamborghini people that day and extremely privileged to have witnessed it.”

The Huracán Performante features innovations in aerodynamics and lightweight engineering that, combined with its improved power plant, its four-wheel drive system, its Lamborghini Piattaforma Inerziale and a dedicated set-up, allows superior track performance to be maximized while delivering the most engaging and dynamic road drive.
Joining the Lamborghini development team at the Nürburgring were representatives from Pirelli, responsible for development of tires specifically for the Huracán Performante: the same Pirelli Trofeo R tires available on cars delivered to owners.

The Huracán Performante is revealed officially by Automobili Lamborghini at Geneva Motor Show on the first press day, 7 March 2017, 8.55 am at the Lamborghini stand. Follow the unveiling in Geneva at live.lamborghini and join the conversation with #HuracanPerformante.

Safariing in Comfort?

When I think of going on a safari, I imagine myself sitting in a beat up truck. The seats are hard and stiff, the floors are dirty, and the air conditioning is broken. Never did I think the words “Safari” and “Comfort” would go together until I saw the new 2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet. If you’ve ever wanted to enjoy off road adventures through nature but the idea of having to suffer through uncomfortable and bumpy rides kept you from doing so, then look no further! The G650 is both capable of traversing rough terrain and providing all the comfort you will ever need.

With a twin-turbo V12 engine that can deliver a total of 630hp and 1000 Newton-meters of torque, portal axles with a ground clearance of 450 millimeters, and fully locking differentials, there are few things mother nature can throw at the G650 Landaulet that it can’t handle.

Sure, the G650 Looks and performs like a beast, but it has a much MUCH softer interior. The rear cabin of this machine is where it truly shines. The longer wheelbase provides significant leg room and when paired with the leather reclining seats, massage programs, pillows, and calf rests, you are sure to reach maximum relaxation. Need some extra privacy? The glass partition separating the front from the back can be raised and become opaque. Feel like getting some fresh air? With a touch of a button, the soft top roof can be lowered electronically, making it possible to stand up and enjoy the views. The back also features thermal cup holders, display monitors, hidden compartments, and more.

When I first saw the G650 Landaulet, I thought “It’s just another off-road vehicle” but boy was I wrong. With its off-roading capabilities and its lavish interior, the G650 Landaulet enters a class of its own. If you enjoy the outdoors but want to experience it in style and luxury, then this is the car for you.

Baby Aston on a Budget

So let’s get this out of the way first, this is a not a new car. In fact it is 9 years old. However the car literally still smells new, the copious amounts of leather that adorn every surface still look and feel brand new, and with only seven thousand miles on it from new it is not hard to see why.

So this lends the question, what much newer machinery can you buy with less than 7k miles on the clock for the just under 60k entry fee that this Aston Martin requires?

A quick hunt on cars.com yields the following results:

How about a Volvo XC60, a BMW 330, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, a Merc C300 or how about a Ford F150 pick up truck? While all undoubtedly fine vehicles, none of them will change your life like this Aston Martin will…this Aston is just plain sexy in a way that few cars are at any price point.

I dropped off a brand new Lamborghini Huracan Spyder and stepped straight into this Aston preparing to be underwhelmed. I was dropping 9 years, nearly 200 horsepower, and a soft top for a hard top. While I must admit that the Huracan Spyder is now firmly my favorite car of all time, this apparent downgrade was no where near as drastic as I was expecting.

This lead me to want to answer the following question – can you have the full Cars&Caviar exotic car experience in a sub $60k 9 year old car? It wasn’t two minutes onto the highway when the first SUV pulled along side with the camera phone armed and ready. First slow intersection kids yelled out “there’s an Aston Martin!!!” Every intersection you get the thumbs up, and people really seem to like the image that the car projects. Classy and cool, I can think of few other ways to get front row valet parking for such a modest investment.

The only clue that you are an older vehicle is the text on the sat nav, but thankfuly it folds away with the touch of a button. The interior design is gorgeous, classy and every square inch is covered in leather. The dial are especially cool in metaliic silver, and the tach revs rapidly the wrong direction as you accelerate.

The car is not blindingly fast, fast enough to be entertaining, but not super car rapid. The part piece is the roar that the engine makes above around 4k rpm. It is magic!

This brings me to the final and overwhelming aspect of this car – wow is it beautiful!!!

The lines are simple, unadorned with spoilers and do dads, with just gorgeous and sexy curves that flow effortlessly from on end of the other.

As I write this the car is for sales, although I must admit I am sorely tempted to pick this up myself.
